Registration for free Cathay Pacific flight tickets from six cities in the US and Canada will open on Thursday morning as part of Hong Kong’s campaign to revive tourism.

Free roundtrip tickets will be offered for flights from Boston, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles in the US, and Toronto and Vancouver in Canada. Passengers will still have to pay taxes, fees, and other surcharges linked to the flight.

The giveaway opens at 8am. Only members of Cathay Pacific can take part, although those who wish to participate can register as members at the time of the entry.

The promotion is part of the government’s Hello Hong Kong campaign, which features the giveaway of 500,000 plane tickets to entice overseas visitors to the city. The campaign, announced in February, is aimed at boosting business and tourism in Hong Kong following the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions.

Registrations for free flights from South Korea, provided by Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong Airlines, and Greater Bay Airlines began on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Earlier, airlines also distributed free flights from Southeast Asian cities including Singapore and Bangkok. More tickets – from places including Japan, Taiwan, Australia and the UK – will be given away in the coming months.

Hong Kong’s tourism sector was hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, with the government imposing one of the world’s strictest social-distancing and quarantine regimes. Arrivals were required to isolate in hotel rooms for three weeks at one point during the pandemic.

The public also had to abide by a mask mandate, while people who did not meet the government’s Covid-19 vaccination requirements were barred from venues including restaurants and government buildings.
