Our corrections policy was first adopted on March 3, 2020.

  1. HKFP must correct factual errors as quickly as possible.
  2. Journalists should openly and honestly report errors to their editors. We encourage readers to report any errors to us via the contact page.
  3. Falsities, misquotes, incorrect names, or misleading statements are among the situations where a correction may be warranted. However, corrections will not usually be issued for simple typos, unless the meaning or facts of the story are affected (see example.)
  4. When issuing a correction, HKFP will publish:
    • The day or time of the correction.
    • The information that was corrected.
    • If appropriate, an apology and explanation.
  5. Major corrections will appear more prominently at the top of the article (see example), whilst minor corrections will appear at the bottom (see example). Editors will judge as to the severity of the case.
  6. In extreme cases, we may withdraw a story from the website and replace it – at the same URL – with an explanation (see example).
  7. If a new development or information emerges which contradicts a story, or affects the original facts (such as a rising death toll in a fire), we may consider clarifying the issue to readers within the story, writing a follow-up article, or adding an update disclaimer at the bottom of the report.
  8. As of August 1, 2023, HKFP will maintain a log detailing all corrections issued across the site.
